Some have asked, what was the purpose of the homeless retreat?
I would have to say, that if for no other reason to have some fun.
How often do the people on the streets have any fun?
Based on my conversations, it's a rare thing to see anything positive on the streets.
There is a lot of arguing and fighting.
There is the struggle against the elements.
How about the sheer fact that you have to walk miles to get any where.
Everything is scattered all across the city.
Safety is always an issue.
Where are you going to eat? Where are you going to sleep?
If you want to stay in the cold weather shelter then you better be prepared to find a way to get downtown to 17th street and Broad.
After you get to 17th street, then be prepared to walk another half mile to the Conrad center.
Don't be late because they are only open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm. Easy for me to say when you have transportation.
Then you get a referral, if your lucky. Afterwards you have to go all the way back to the shelter about another three miles and wait till it opens.
There isn't much of a chance to have any fun when you live on the streets.
On the retreat we participated in some team building exercises which were a lot of fun.
We even went shopping for clothes!
Archery, skeet shooting, movies and site seeing also were a part of the retreat.
Laughter and meals were shared together.
So if for no other reason, I wanted to see these 10 men have some FUN!
